Retrench \Re*trench"\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. {Retrenched}; p. pr.
& vb. n. {Retrenching}.] [OF. retrenchier, F. retrancher;
pref. re- re- + OF. trenchier, F. trancher, to cut. See

1. To cut off; to pare away.
